Republic day
what is republic day?
The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic. 26 January was chosen as the date for Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress in lieu of the Realm status as a Dominion later instated by the departing British Regime.
Why india celebrates republic day?
Republic Day is celebrated on 26th January every year to mark the day on which our constitution came into effect in 1950. After this day our country truly became democratic and independent. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous other freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country.
It was therefore declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since. It might seem like a question that curious pre-schoolers might ask but it is often asked why the date was specifically chosen for Republic Day to be celebrated. It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj or autonomy. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj or complete, absolute autonomy as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was celebrated on January 26th, 1930 for the first time. It continued to be observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 began to be celebrated as our Independence Day.The day brings together people of different casts, creeds, colors and backgrounds to celebrate the occasion with great fervor and enthusiasm. The national capital Delhi also hosts a grand parade to mark the occasion in which the Indian Military takes part and exhibits the grandeur that is associated with it. The pride and rich diversity of the country is on display in the parade which starts after the president unfurls the national flag and people pay their respects to martyrs who lost their lives while serving the country.
India's Prime Minister honours the martyrs by placing a ringlet at India Gate's Amar Jawan Jyoti. The ceremony proceeds with a 21-gun salute, singing of the national anthem, and hoisting of the national flag. The brave soldiers are presented with the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Children and citizens who have shown courage in difficult circumstances are also recognized with awards. The day is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country, especially educational institutions. Schools, colleges and polytechnics host events to celebrate the day and create awareness among students. Speeches, extempore, quizzes and essay writing competitions are organized for students to participate. Republic Day is quite different from Independence Day but most people often end up confusing the two. Since both of them are about the nation and values of sovereignism, autonomy and independence.
Constitution of india
The Constitution of India (IAST: Bhāratīya Saṃvidhāna) is the supreme law of India. The document lays down the framework that demarcates fundamental political code, structure, procedures, powers, and duties of government institutions and sets out fundamental rights, directive principles, and the duties of citizens. It is the longest written constitution of any country.
It imparts constitutional supremacy (not parliamentary supremacy, since it was created by a constituent assembly rather than Parliament) and was adopted by its people with a declaration in its preamble.
Parliament cannot override the constitution.
It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and became effective on 26 January 1950. The constitution replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the country's fundamental governing document, and the Dominion of India became the Republic of India. To ensure constitutional autochthony, its framers repealed prior acts of the British parliament in Article 395. India celebrates its constitution on 26 January as Republic Day.
The constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic, assures its citizens justice, equality and liberty, and endeavours to promote fraternity. The original 1950 constitution is preserved in a helium-filled case at the Parliament House in New Delhi. The words "secular" and "socialist" were added to the preamble by 42nd amendment act in 1976, during the Emergency.
